The Psychiatric Aspects in Alopecia Areata

Abstract
For the purpose of evaluating psychological influences to allopecia areata, this study was done. 53 alopecia areata patients, 86 premature baldness pattern patients and 70 normal control group were involved in this study. to measure personality
structure. degree of psychiatric symptom and ego strength, MMPI and Barron's Ego Strength scale were applicated to above all 3 groups. Accumulated data is analyzed with SPSS/PC and we had used chi-square test, covariance analysis, ANOVA test.
Analyzed
results were following.
1) According to MMPI results, alopecia areata group showed significantly more introverted, depressive, compliant tendency than other two groups.
2) Alopecia areata group had the highest anxiety level among the three groups in MMPI.
3) The result of average total ego strength score were as following: Alopecia areata group was 26.8, premature baldness pattern group was 29.9, and normal control group was 33.8. So alopecia areata had significantly the weakest ego strength
among
three
groups(p<0.01).
